Comparisons to the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon have surfaced once again, this time in reference to alleged collusion among government officials to prevent President Donald Trump from being elected.
In a tweet Thursday, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul alluded to a major scandal involving “high ranking Obama government officials.”
The Kentucky Republican called for an investigation into a scandal he said “could be WORSE than Watergate.”
Time to investigate high ranking Obama government officials who might have colluded to prevent the election of @realDonaldTrump! This could be WORSE than Watergate!

Paul went on to tweet about other matters throughout the morning and offered no further context for his intriguing post.
Speculation began to build, with the Washington Examiner noting that his tweet came shortly after two FBI officials were found to have expressed personal criticism of then-candidate Trump as they worked on investigations with a potential impact on his campaign.
The news has prompted Trump and a number of his closest supporters — including a handful of Fox News Channel hosts — to promote the theory that the current investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia is a politically motivated witch-hunt.
“Justice with Judge Jeanine” host Jeanine Pirro offered what she claimed was evidence of such a conspiracy in a recent monologue.

“Sounds far fetched, doesn’t it?” she concluded. “It’s not. There’s a core group of arrogant, corrupt and lawless individuals that felt that they, and not we, should decide the presidential election. And when they failed, they conspired to create the false narrative to not just muddy our choice for president but to bring down his presidency and his family as well.”
Pirro further alleged that “the evidence is there” to support her theory and “the motive (is) disclosed.”
Trump himself set the tone for that narrative in public statements and tweets questioning the ability of the FBI to perform its duties.
Earlier this month, he impeached the agency’s reputation in a pair of tweets, writing in one post that it “is in Tatters – worst in History!”
After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness.

Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI “agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.” Led Clinton Email probe. @foxandfriends Clinton money going to wife of another FBI agent in charge.

Congressional testimony on the matter continues this week with Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe reportedly scheduled for closed-door hearings Thursday in front of two House committees.
