What Trump Firing Tillerson Means for Iran

The mullahs in Tehran have got to be a little nervous right now.

President Trump last week signaled he is deadly serious about stopping Iran from attaining nuclear weapons when he fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Tillerson was certainly no fan of the Iranian nuclear program, but his pragmatic approach was holding Trump back from taking the kind of drastic steps necessary to face down and defeat the Islamic Republic.

Speaking to reporters after firing Tillerson, Trump acknowledged that the move had a lot to do with what’s coming next vis-a-vis the Iran nuclear deal:

“Rex and I have been talking about this for a long time. We got along actually quite well, but we disagreed on things. When you look at the Iran deal, I think it’s terrible. I guess he thought it was OK. … So we were not really thinking the same.”

Trump immediately named CIA Director Mike Pompeo as Tillerson’s replacement at State.

And that, too, should have Iran worried.

Pompeo and Trump are of one mind regarding the Iran nuclear deal.

When he took over at the CIA, Pompeo’s first tweet read: “I look forward to rolling back this disastrous deal with the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism.”
