Trump has continuously sought guidance from faith leaders. Trump recently requested the presence of several inner-city pastors and lawmakers to discuss prison reform.
Pastors Darrell Scott, John Gray, and Van Moody were among those who attended the meeting with President Trump. Unfortunately, several of the faith leaders present — including Van Moody — were attacked for simply attending the White House meeting.
Following the backlash, Pastor Van Moody wrote an opinion piece for Fox News in response to much of the public’s disapproval. The article explains Van Moody’s perspective — admitting that he does not agree with all of Trump’s policies but in relation to prison reform, Trump is trying to make a difference for the greater good.
“The president expressed to us that he is concerned about the incredible challenges our prisoners and former prisoners face under the current system. He said his administration is currently working on prison reform legislation to help,” Van Moody wrote. “I thanked President Trump for this and for ‘caring for all people,’ meaning I am encouraged and hopeful about his desire for prison reform, his wish to help the formerly incarcerated, and his determination to partner with the faith-based community on important issues affecting the community.”
Additionally, the Christian pastor exposed the “most disturbing mistake” of Trump critics: “the vitriol and contempt that is present even when President Trump’s efforts are positive and will clearly help those who need it most.”
“My prayer is that we no longer sacrifice the people who need help the most on the altar of our egos and political ideology. We don’t have to agree on all things – in fact we might only agree on a few things – but I still believe we can work together for the betterment of this country, its citizens and our communities,” Van Moody added.
“As a Christian, my ultimate example is Jesus, and in the spirit of the popular bracelets from years ago I think we have to ask the question: “What would Jesus do?” This answer is simple. He would work to make a difference in the lives of people, regardless of who is in the White House,” he continued. “I pray that we do likewise.”
In addition to the opinion article he wrote for Fox, Van Moody has participated in several media appearances to respond to the criticism. Watch two of his interviews below:
