Video: Angry Patriot Parents Give School Board an Earful Over Teacher’s Anti-Military Comments

More than 100 flag-waving protesters angry over El Rancho High School teacher and Pico Rivera Councilman Gregory Salcido’s in-class comments disparaging military members rallied outside the high school Friday.

Classes were canceled, officials with the El Rancho Unified School District said, so no students were present. Teachers, however, were on campus for training.

Many of the protesters were veterans who said they fought for Salcido’s First Amendment rights. But they clarified that while he has the right to free speech, they don’t believe that right extends to the classroom.

“As frustrated as I may be, all he was doing was exercising his First Amendment rights,” Dominic Lopez, a veteran who grew up in Montebello, told the crowd. “As you see, behind me are people that are willing to die to defend everybody else’s freedoms. We give up our freedoms, so you guys can have yours.”

He added, “Now you’ve got a teacher who’s in a position with kids. I understand that, but when you’re in a position, there’s certain responsibilities. I understand you may want to talk your mind and everything else, but there’s a platform and forum somewhere else. And I do not tolerate bullying, and that’s exactly what he did.”
