Trump Did Something No Other US President Has Ever Dared

Every US president has supported Israel, or at least pretended to.

And yet, not one of them had the balls to implement the will of both the American and the Israeli people by recognizing Israel’s sovereignty on the Golan Heights.

Not until Trump, that is.

For decades, US presidents have inexplicably been to scared of upsetting the Arabs, Russia and the more liberal elements in Europe to back Israeli control of the Golan.

Israel captured the strategic plateau in the Six Day War in 1967, after it had been used for the preceding 19 years as a launch pad for repeated deadly attacks by Syrian forces on Israeli civilians.

Everyone knew Israel could never surrender the Golan to Syria without seriously risking its security. With the outbreak of the ongoing Syrian civil war, that fact became even more apparent.

Trump finally decided that enough was enough, and he was going to do what should have been done long ago.

“This was a long time in the making,” Trump said as he signed the official order. “This should have been done, I would say, numerous presidents ago. But for some reason they didn’t do it, and I am very honored to have done it.”

The text of the proclamation stipulates that “any possible future peace agreement in the region must account for Israel’s need to protect itself from Syria and other regional threats. Based on these unique circumstances, it is therefore appropriate to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”
