Top Democrat Who Liberals Hoped Would Beat Trump in 2020 Just Found Himself in Hot Water

Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois has made himself a hero of the liberal left by spending the past 12 months doing nothing but “resisting” President Trump.

He’s even been arrested, TWICE, for publicly protesting. It seems to be all he’s good for these days.

Of course, to liberals, that makes Gutierrez a perfect candidate to field against Trump in the 2020 election.

Gutierrez gave Democratic voters a bit of a scare recently when he abruptly announced he’d be leaving Congress after 13 terms.

But, now, it appears that move is all part of his maneuvering to contest the White House.

Ironically, Gutierrez kicked off his tentative presidential campaign by declaring himself the candidate who’s going to do something about “guaranteeing regulations and rules about campaign financing.”

The problem there is that Gutierrez and his wife (who’s also his campaign manager and a political lobbyist) have been involved in some pretty shady maneuvering when it comes to campaign finances.

From the Washington Free Beacon:

Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez (Ill.), who announced last week that he will not seek reelection after spending 24 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, will no longer be able to pay his wife hundreds of thousands of dollars from campaign funds once he officially departs from Congress.

Soraida Gutierrez, his wife, has collected more than $430,000 from Gutierrez for Congress, Luis’s campaign committee, since 2010. Soraida is the top recipient of expenditures this year.

Soraida, who was a registered lobbyist in Illinois prior to appearing on the campaign’s payroll, has been listed as the campaign’s office manager, fundraiser, and treasurer for the past seven years.

Gutierrez’s campaign committee has reported $77,838.69 in operating expenditures from the beginning of January to the end of September. Soraida has received seven checks for $6,000 each—or $42,000 total—during this time, meaning that she has collected more than half of his campaign’s disbursements.
