Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton demanded the withdrawal of thousands of National Guard members in the Washington, D. C., area after he indicated no “credible” threats are present.
“With the inauguration complete and threats receding, now it’s time, yes, to send home the troops,” Cotton wrote in a Wednesday op-ed.
“I sit on the Intelligence Committee, but I’m aware of no specific, credible threat reporting—as distinguished from aspirational, uncoordinated bluster on the internet—that justifies this continued troop presence. Thus, I believe the rest of these soldiers should also go home to their families and civilian jobs,” he continued.
Thousands of guard members were deployed following the Jan. 6 riot, which saw a mob of demonstrators clash with law enforcement and eventually breach the Capitol in an attempt to interrupt the certification of President Biden’s election victory. Five people died in the siege, including one law enforcement officer.
The armed men and women were stationed primarily to ensure the safety of Biden’s inauguration. Following the inauguration, the National Guard announced the removal of 15,000 soldiers from the Washington area, with around 7,000 projected to stay through the end of the month.
