According to a new report from CNN, Mitch McConnell has been warned by some in the GOP that he may lose his leadership role if he votes to convict former President Trump.
“If he does, I don’t know if he can stay as leader,” a un-named GOP senator told CNN according to their report.
Senator Ron Johnson bluntly answered “No, no, no,” when asked if he could support McConnell if he voted to convict Trump.
Johnson said it would be a “dangerous precedent” and added “I don’t even think we should be having a trial.”
McConnell placed blame on Trump Tuesday, saying “The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like. But we pressed on.”
Per CNN “McConnell has not said how he would vote in the impeachment trial, telling his colleagues and associates that he would keep an open mind and listen to the arguments presented when the trial gets underway. But he has privately contended that Trump’s actions were at least impeachable — and has made no secret about his disdain with the former President’s actions in the run-up to the deadly January 6 riot at the US Capitol where pro-Trump insurrections tried to stop the congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s win.”
