It’s Confirmed! He Won’t Be Seeking Re-Election

The Republican Party suffered a blow on Thursday when it received confirmation of a high-profile “resignation” from Congress.

The announcement will also likely hurt President Donald Trump.

We now know that Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas will not be seeking re-election in 2018.

In a statement released to the press, Smith said:

“For several reasons, this seems like a good time to pass on the privilege of representing the 21st District to someone else. I have one new grandchild and a second arriving soon!! And I hope to find other ways to stay involved in politics.”

Smith joins a growing list of Republicans who will be giving up their seats in Congress next year.

Some have decided to step down because they don’t like Trump and the GOP’s new direction under him.

Others, like Smith, are Trump allies whose presence will be sorely missed by the president.

Back in January when Trump was taking office, Smith stated:

“The national liberal media won’t print that, or air it or post it. Better to get your news directly from the President. In fact, it might be the only way to get the unvarnished truth.”

While Smith’s seat will presumably remain safely in Republican hands, anything can happen.
