Hero Down: Waveland PD Officer Katie Cash Killed In Crash One Day After Graduating From Academy

By

Waveland Police Department (WPD) Officer Katie Cash died in an off-duty crash on Saturday, just one day after graduating from the police academy.

The 33-year-old officer was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Highway 603 near Paradise Road at approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 17, WLOX reported.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MSP) said the vehicle traveled off the highway and flipped.

None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts, WLOX reported.

The off-duty officer died from her injuries at the scene, the MSP said.

Waveland Police Chief Mike Prendergast confirmed Officer Cash’s death in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Police Officer Katie Cash. Katie was a 33-year-old mother of two who had just graduated the police academy on Friday, July 16th,” Chief Prendergast wrote. “We ask that you keep the entire Waveland Police Department in your prayers and especially her two little girls and their family.

The chief said Officer Cash was excited to serve her community as a law enforcement officer.

“It was her dream, she told me, to be a police officer,” he told WLOX, recalling the moment he hired her. “I said here’s your chance.”

Waveland Mayor Mike Smith ordered flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of Officer Cash.
