Some folks have been waiting a long time for this one.
Over the weekend, Texas Governor Greg Abbott officially banned red light cameras in the Lone Star State.
The cameras are exactly what you’d imagine. They monitor cars entering intersections, and those that enter after the light turns red are photographed. A ticket of $75 is then mailed to the owner of the offending vehicle.
As the Star Telegram reported:
Critics have long said the cameras violate the U.S. Constitution and lead to rear-end accidents. Supporters maintain that they make the streets safer and generate needed money for cities and the state.
State lawmakers have proposed, unsuccessfully, turning off these cameras through the years since they became legal in 2007.
Gov. Abbott took to Twitter to celebrate this victory:
I just signed the law that bans red light cameras in Texas. #txlege pic.twitter.com/AyF28hxGwO
