Child Arrested for Refusing to Say Pledge of Allegiance…Or Was He?

By

A sixth-grader in Florida was arrested last week.

The reason, if you read the mainstream media, is that he refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Of course, it’s not illegal to refuse to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But, judging by mainstream media headlines, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Florida police officers exceeded their authority and charged this kid for doing just that.

For instance, the Washington Post reported: “Florida sixth-grader charged with misdemeanor after refusing to recite Pledge of Allegiance”

It’s pretty clear that they want us to think this kid was arrested for the “crime” of not reciting the pledge. It plays into their narrative of America becoming a Nazi-like police state under President Trump.

As usual, the truth of the matter is buried deeper down in the story.

As the Washington Post eventually acknowledges:

The Lakeland Police Department said in a news release that the student was not arrested for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

“This arrest was based on the student’s choice to disrupt the classroom, make threats and resisting the officer’s efforts to leave the classroom,” the release said.

This student didn’t just refuse to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. He aggressively argued with the teacher over his choice, and then refused to leave the classroom when asked to do so.

He is being charged for disrupting a school, just as any student would if they did the same for any other reason. That the trigger for this episode was the Pledge of Allegiance is just a convenient excuse for liberals to make another mountain out of a molehill.
